Jerry Seinfeld, pencil

Saw Jerry's new stand-up show in Vegas in November. Side-splitting silliness on the beautiful banality of modern life's minor and major inconveniences. Well worth the price of admission. Given the comedian's almost manic energy level, it's hard to believe he's 65 years old.

Mr R Monday Special: Heidi Gardner SNL pencil

The positive:  Brownies won another game that we should have yesterday. And a win is a win.

The negative:  it happened because of the Bengals Brown's like red-zone production (i.e., mostly ineffective), a freak pick six by Ward and a couple replay reverses going our way.

The inexplicable:  we have two of the NFL's best backs facing the 32nd (of 32) ranked rushing defense and don't run the ball in the 1st half. We did in the 2nd and, amazingly, won.

A victory in Arizona's desert next Sunday keeps our super-model thin playoff hopes alive. I'm hoping for an 8-8 finish, which would be better than last season. Enjoy your week!

Friday Comic-Book: Captain American and the Falcon #171

Will Browns fans ever recover from last Sunday's "performance"? The pride of lake Erie beaten, nay dominated, by a battered, bandaged Steelers squad led to victory by a 3rd string QB who was released in the pre-season?

Pittsburgh, to their coach's credit, demonstrated what it means to be a football team; Cleveland, led, I guess, by our coach, illustrated, once again, that the Browns are still the Browns until proven otherwise.

It wouldn't be surprising to see some of Cleveland's players quit (at least mentally) during this week's contest against the Bengals. Maybe asking for the team to just be better than last year was too much.

Enjoy your weekend!

Joker movie Joaquin Phoenix pencil

The Joker movie is damn good, very disturbing and definitely not for children.

Phoenix absolutely fantastic at villain humanization.

Marvel should follow this example and make an R-rated Dr. Doom movie.

Friday Comic Booker Batman Killing Joke Auction scrawl

Scrawled for the Kalahari's ESOP Foundation auction.

Winner personalized it by inserting whoever's caricature they wanted into the camera lens and word balloon (Leo, of course), plus they strolled off with some delicious Dietsch chocolate-covered pretzels, Wolfie's gourmet nuts and Speedway gas gift cards (all Findlay, OHIO companies). :)

Fun stuff raising money for employee ownership - go ESOPs!

In a separate, somber note, it's difficult to root for the Brownies after witnessing last Thursday's solid performance ruined by one awful, thoughtless, emotional, vicious helmet swing. Those who bleed orange, like me, hate the Steelers, but nowhere close to that much. Do we deserve to lose to the Dolphins?

Enjoy your weekend!

Mr R Monday Special: Phoebe Waller-Bridge Fleabag

Amazon's Fleabag is a great show; Waller-Bridge is a super-nova
brilliant writer, comedian and actor.

Enjoyed the first season more than the second because
it's funnier, fresher and less poignant.

Still, it's all great and highly recommended, but NOT for kids.

Bob Odenkirk, Better Call Saul pencil

Have yet to watch El Camino on NetFlix (although who doesn't love the car-truck or is it a truck-car? Who cares because it's 100% awesome).

Enjoy your day!

Mr R Tuesday? special: Tessa Thompson, Valkyrie

Brownies WON a game - woo hoo!!!

Flip a coin to predict the outcome of Thursday night's titanic struggle against
the always evil, amazingly resurgent and resilient Steelers.

Even though I'm forever rooting for Clev, pigskin logic says it's a short week and better coaching and team discipline wins this one. Both those, alas, have been in short supply off Lake Erie's northcoast this season.

Friday Comic Booker: Daredevil 256 cover

Loved the Typhoid Mary story back in the day.

Can't remember one iota of it now (did she appear on the TV series?). Ought to reread it; probably ought to put that on list with the many other "oughts".

FYI:  look closely at the fishnet pattern on her left calf to see what
happens when a scrawler loses focus:  bigfoot fur!!!

Enjoy your weekend!

Mr R Monday Special: Anna Torv (Wendy, Mindhunter)

Mindhunter Season 2 is worth a watch, especially if you enjoyed the first season. This time, it focuses more on Bill than Holden.

Better Call Saul Mike Ermantraut (Jonathan Banks)

Will and I NetFlix zoomed through Better Call Saul seasons 1-3. Super fun, great characters, compelling drama and sometimes zany cinematography.

We started Season 4 with high hopes and, ugh, found ourselves in a plot-less, aimless, sargasso sea of TV. Fantastic characters, like Kim and Mike, devolved into caricatures of themselves, so disappointing. Even the great and wonderful Saul was lost without Chuck as his foil (and without Chuck's foil too).

Don't know if we'll watch Season 5, if it ever appears. Would like to know what happens to Nacho and Kim. Such a bummer.

Haven't watched El Camino yet, but hoping that's where Season 4's creativity, crisp writing and excitement went - don't spoil it!

Mr R Monday Special: Rhea Seehorn (Kim Wexler, Better Call Saul)

Saw Mr R recently. He's still logging mileage, despite tearing his MCL.

Doc said that if he could take the pain, he couldn't do any more damage.

Go Mr R! But also think about getting that knee repaired, ok?

Enjoy your week!

Tom Holland, Spidey Homecoming pencil

Spider-man Far From Home grosses more than a billion and Sony and
Disney can't agree how to jointly produce more Spidey movies? Wow.

Let's face front, true believers, Peter Parker outside the Marvel Universe is like
LeBron James not being a Cavalier (oops bad simile, lol).

Get it figured out - fan boys want Spidey #3! Or #8. Whatever
number it is, it will make buku benjamins for everyone.

Mr R Monday: Hannah Gross, The Sinner (Season 2)

Well, that was quite the wake-up call for Cleveland yesterday, wasn't it?

Hard to find any silver lining in that dark brown cloud of football ugliness.
Our punter did well? We, at least, lead the league in one category:  penalties?

It's only one game, but....

Enjoy your week!

Atypical Casey (Bridgette Lundy-Paine)

NetFlix's dramedy Atypical is a fun, sometimes poignant show.

Really enjoyed watching the relationships among Casey, Sam and their friends develop and look forward to Season 3's release.

Wednesday, August 21, 2019

Stranger Things Steve and Robin (Joe Kerry, Maya Hawke)

Stranger Things Season 3 is better than Season 2
(and Season 2 was really good).

No spoilers, but Steve and Robin become ice-cream, not jukebox, heroes.

Mr R Monday Special: Thor Lady Sif (Jamie Alexander)

Reading Jason Aaron's Thor run (yeah, I know, I'm seven years behind
current continuity, lol). Enjoyed the Gorr God Killer Tale, fun
stuff with excellent illustration.

Enjoy your week!

Mr R Monday Special is a Delta Tray Table Special times two too!

Scrawling Delta tray tables last week and found these in the Strathmore mess.

Also, thanks to Delta's computer system for the "upgrade" from my normal aisle exit row seat to an economy "comfort" middle seat. With upgrades like that, who needs downgrades? Oh well, the tough life continues. :)

Enjoy your week!

Friday Comic Booker: Wolverine Adamantium Agenda

Can't stop myself from seeing the title as the Adam Ant ium Agenda.

Probably need to do myself a favor and unplug the jukebox. :)

Enjoy your weekend!

David Harbour, Sheriff Hopper, Stranger Things

Binge watched Stranger Things Seasons 2 & 3 with Will. Excellent continuation of the friend-based 1980s fun, creepy horror and sci-fi suspense started in season 1, highly recommended.

Season 3, in fact, fantastic four (comic book, not movies) great.

New Coke level disappointed, however, that StarCourt mall didn't have a Hot Sam Pretzel shop. Strolling Randall Mall's red carpets with a Hot Sam Pretzel in one hand and an Orange Julius in the other equaled living large circa 1985.

Mr R Monday Special: Christina Applegate, Dead to Me

NetFlix's Dead To Me's is loaded with plot twists, great characters and solid performances.  I found myself rooting for characters who didn't deserve my support nor sympathy - excellent, entertaining show.

Enjoy your week!

Friday Comic Booker: Thor 150 b&w and color

Colored with markers and pastels. Maybe, someday, I'll scan these and
do some digital coloring... maybe, lol.

Enjoy your weekend!

Friday Comic Booker: Amazing Spider-Man 66 cover

Finished an actual comic-book cover! Woo hoo!

No guarantees for next Friday, though.

Enjoy your weekend!!!!

Spider-man pencil - Ryan Ottley

Hard not to see Mark Grayson when looking at Ottley's Peter Parker
(and Atom Eve as Mary Jane).

But that's only because I'm a drooling Invincible fan boy.

If you haven't read Invincible, do yourself a favor and pick up the first compendium. Once you get through the first six or so issues and hit the "twist", you'll be hooked (no spoilers).

Mr R Monday Special: Rose Lavelle

'Bought time to restart the Mr R specials right?

Awesome performance by Lavelle and US Women's Soccer Team.

Enjoy your week!

Jake Gyllenhaal Mysterio pencil

Not exactly the normal Friday comic booker, but kind of?

May see the movie this weekend and may be back next Friday with an actual real comic booker.

May being the operative word.

Have a great weekend!

Spidey and Black Cat pencil

Scrawled this Scott Campbell illustration while avoiding the Hilton Head sun.

Semi-smart strategy because a friend got stung by a jellyfish.

The "lesson":  sea creatures don't normally attack people scrawling inside inside air-conditioned beach homes. :)

Also, don't pee, use vinegar (you can thank me later). Cheers!

Black Mirror, Miley Cyrus pencil

New Black Mirror season available on Netflix. It's only three
episodes, is that really a season?

Guess it has been for America's favorite team, the Cleveland Brownies,
in terms of wins. But this year, once again, is our year.

Believe-land!!!

Mr R Monday Special: Emilia Clarke, Daenerys Targaryen

Yeah, Yeah, GOT's ending had some issues (Bran!?! Really?).
But, the series was freakin awesome.

This thoughtful fan's ending would have been much better

Sophie Turner, Sansa Stark, Game of Thrones pencil

Bring on Dark Phoenix and let's get it right this time. By right, I mean Claremont and Byrne's awesome comic version, not another Last Stand.

Enjoy your weekend!

Tuesday, May 28, 2019

Lena Headly, Cersei Lannister, Game of Thrones pencil

Gonna miss Game of Thrones, but there's a TON of great TV shows to watch.

For example, I'm five episodes into Jessica Jones' first NetFlix season -
so far, so good. This is the Marvel Age of TV (and movies)

Enjoy your week!

Mr R Monday Special: Letitia Wright (Black Panther Shuri)

Finally saw Avengers Endgame - it rules the movie-multi-verse.

Huge props to everyone at Marvel-Disney for the awesome entertainment. Looking forward the summer of Spidey and Phase 5.

Thank you Russo Bros - your love of story telling, character development, comic-book fun and movie making shine brighter than the Silver Surfer.

Hope you keep making comic-book movies.

Game of Thrones Night King pencil

Impervious to fire and able to fly a reanimated dragon, seems Targaryen.

Spill the family beans George RR.
